Register your child early to assure a spot at Clays Mill Elementary.

The Fayette County Public Schools continuation plan ensures that a child can finish all grades at a specific school without being sent to an alternate school unless they move. The more critical component of that is that the siblings of those students are guaranteed a spot at the same school. This essentially gives them first priority. If the school becomes overcrowded then any students who register after that point of overcrowding get sent to an alternate school (our alternates include Stonewall, Picadome, Harrison and Garden Springs).

Clays Mill Elementary principal has indicated that parents should register as early as possible in order to minimize the chance that their child may not get a spot there.

There are no details now  on the Clays Mill website but if you go to the FCPS redistricting information page you can read about it.

Redistricting Update (4/10/05 from Jim Pauley):

Neighbors:

I realize that it has been some time since we have provided you an update on the redistricting situation.  We have been doing some legwork behind the scenes to find out what our status really is and what the next steps are.  As you are probably aware, the situation with Edith J Hayes overcrowding has been the primary focus of the redistricting efforts.

At the last FCPS board meeting, we had some action.  As part of the redistricting information there was the following recommendation " Staff also recommends postponing moving Copperfield to Jessie Clark Middle until further study can be completed."  This recommendation was accepted by the board.

At the high school level, the recommendation to move us was never approved, so it did not need to be postponed.  If you look on the FCPS website and go to the "Overcrowding Solutions" area, you will find that we are no longer on the list of recommended moves.  In addition, both the middle school and high school maps show us in our current pattern and do not show any future moves.

You can view the maps here:

What does this mean?  It means that the previous recommendations to move us have been taken off the table (for now).  Understand, that this will likely come up again in the future, but there will be more extensive study completed before a recommendation to move us would be made.  In addition, I would expect that a "task force" that includes parents from the area would be formed (as they were for the EJ Hayes situation) to discuss recommendations for redistricting.

It's our view that this is a positive development.  Our thanks goes again to Kathy Lousignont who continued to make sure that our concerns about being in limbo were addressed by the staff.  Kathy continues to understand our situation and communicates with us as issues arise.

We will not do another update until we hear anything that would change our current status.  If you hear any additional information, please let us know.
